E-mail with the P-series of Sony Ericsson (UIQ)

Regularly people ask me how they can reach their e-mail account (reading out) by a UIQ phone and how they can send e-mails. However, this is not a simple thing. At this page I will explain how you can make an e-mail account on your cellular phone step by step. Before you read any further you have to be sure that your current mailbox is a POP3 mailbox and that you can read out your e-mail by another network. It will take approximately 30 minutes to do all the settings and to make good accounts.

To read out e-mail you have to own an internet dial-up account at an internet provider. I recommend Tiscali at this. At this page I use Tiscali as an example to show you the settings. Dutch people can exactly use these settings, people from other countries can use these settings as a guideline for making their account.

An internet dial-up connection is free to make at Tiscali (also at Zon and Versatel). If you use your internet account once in thirty days your account stays active. The costs for this dial-up connection are the usual call tariffs. At some providers the dial-up numbers are seen as service numbers and they will be named sperately on your bill. The costs are the same as your call tariff. You can tune in your e-mail at the Sony Ericsson P800, P900 and P910i (UIQ devices) by using the following guideline:

Step 1: Before you start you have to sign in for a dial-up connection at Tiscali (or another free internet provider). You can get a free e-mail account at Tiscali by clicking HERE (Dutch only). When you signed in for an account (or when you already have one) you have to print the account details. This can be very handy when you have to re-install your cellular phone for any kind of reason.

Step 2: Go to the control panel in the menu of your cellular phone and choose "Internet accounts". Choose "New" and a new window will open. Select "Dial-up" after "Connection type" and give in the following details:

Account name: Tiscali Internet
Connection type:: Dial-up
User name: username@tiscali.nl (change username into your username)
Password: **** (the password you gave in at Tiscali)
Phonenumber: +316202001019

Step 3: Click "Done" and the internet connection appears in the list of "Internet-accounts". Go back to the control panel and select "Messaging-accounts". Click new and give in the following details:

At "Basic":
Account name: Email box (fill in the name of your e-mailbox)
Your name: Your name (this name will appear at the receiver of your e-mail)
Email address: your e-mail address (For example: info@gsmhelpdesk.nl)
Verbindingstype POP3
Internet account: Tiscali Internet (or the name you gave your internet account in step 2)

At "Inbox":
User name: The username with which you identify yourself when opening your messages.
Password: Your mailbox password.
Incomming server address: the POP3 address of the mailbox you want to read out (For example: netmail.home.nl, pop3.tiscali.nl or mail.gsmhelpdesk.nl)

At "Outbox":
Outgoing server address: smtp.tiscali.nl
Gebruik SMTP-authenticatie: No

Now you're ready for receiving, reading and sending your e-mail messages. You can do this by going to your messages, click at your mailbox name (this is in the list) and select "Get&send".

If you receive any errors during the reading out of your e-mail you have done one of the following things: You gave in an incorrect setting, you gave in an incorrect POP3 or SMTP server, you gave in an incorrect username or password or your dial-up account isn't active or the settings of this are incorrect.

WATCH OUT: During the reading out of e-mail you have a telephone connection. This connection will cost you calling minutes. After collecting your e-mails always close the telephone connection to make sure you won't have an unpleasant surprise. In most cases your cellular phone does this by itself. You can recognise an active connection by the globe nest to the signal-strength sign.
