Triple-band devices

What are triple-band devices, how do you know if a device is a triple-band device and what are the advantages and disadvantages of a triple-band device?

A triple-band device is qualified for three network frequencies. In the whole world there are basically 4 types of cellular phone networks: 850, 900, 1800 and 1900 Mhz networks. More information about these types of networks you can find elsewhere within this helpdesk. A triple-band device is qualified for three of these networks. In actual practice the most cellular phones are made for the 900, 1800 and 1900 Mhz networks.

How will you know what kind of device you have? Basically I can say that if you bought your cellular phone round and after 2003 this will be a triple-band device in 8 of the 10 cases. A reliable conclusion can be made when you look this up at the box of your cellular phone. Most of the time there's described for what types of networks your cellular phone is compatible. If it says that your cellular phone is compatible with "900 Mhz" or "E-GSM 900" networks it is a single-band device. When the description says your cellular phone is compatible with 900 and 1800 Mhz networks (or something like that) you have a dual-band device. When the description says your cellular phone is compatible with 900, 1800 and 1900 Mhz networks you have a triple-band device. If you don't have the original box of your cellular phone anymore you can also look in the manual. Unfortunately you can't find out what kind of device you have by checking the network just as with single-band devices and dual-band devices. That's because the 1900 Mhz network isn't't active in Europe. If you're in North America you are able to find out what kind of device you have by checking the network. If you can reach a network inside North America you have a triple-band device. You can find more information about single-band, dual-band and triple-band devices elsewhere within this helpdesk.

What are the advantages of a triple-band device? There are quite many advantages. Basically, when you go abroad you can use all the networks there are (in Europe, Asia and North America). A couple of networks operate on two freqencies and because of this you have a better reach and call / conversation quality. A disadvantage of a quattro-band device is that the battery use is a bit higher because your cellular phone "listens" to more frequencies.
